Today we celebrate the 100th anniversary of the 19th amendment being ratified to the U.S.Constitution giving women the right to vote.

Jefferson resident 103-year-old Alice Walters was very young when the 19th amendment was ratified, but she recalls her mother being a strong person in her household.

“Mother and dad were real close. Dad said, ‘Mother, you do what she says. And it made a difference to me because mother said it was this way because she went to school and she must have had some training. And it was a joy to have someone like that.”

She says it was because of her mother teaching her at a young age to read other languages, like German, that she was allowed to go to school. Walters appreciates what the 19th amendment means for all women and has enjoyed being able to vote all of her life.
