Two destroyed grain storage bins at Heartland Cooperative in Rippey

Monday’s derecho storm caused lots of damage in Greene County.

Greene County Emergency Management Coordinator Dennis Morlan estimates at least $15 million of damage and Greene County Supervisor Chair John Muir believes that at least one-third of the county’s crops have been destroyed. The major property damage includes at least $1 million to Cobblestone Inn and Suites in Jefferson, rolled campers at Holiday RV, two grain storage bins and partial damage to the fertilizer plant at Heartland Cooperative in Rippey, along with tree limbs falling onto houses and vehicles.

Due to the extent of the damage, Greene County has been added to the governor’s disaster proclamation, allowing residents and public governments to apply for financial relief. The City of Jefferson is estimating $1 million of cleanup expenses and at least three months to fully cleanup the town.

Jefferson Mayor Matt Gordon and Greene County Supervisor Chair John Muir appreciates how city crews, secondary roads, law enforcement and fire personnel all pitched in to help clean up.
