Several power lines are still down across Greene County following Monday’s derecho storm.
The Jefferson Fire Department responded to at least three fires between Monday and Tuesday due to downed power lines. One call was about a shelter house that started smoking from a downed power line on Monday at Washington Park, and the other two were from brush piles that caught fire. The Greene County Secondary Roads Department reports as of Thursday, there were six road closures on county roads due to downed power lines across the road.
Midland Power Cooperative CEO Bill McKim advises everyone to avoid approaching a downed power line and keep in mind, “distance is safety.”
“If you see a downed power line please stay away from it. It could still be energized, it could be dangerous. Just for everybody’s safety, please stay away from downed power lines.”
Greene County Sheriff Jack Williams and Jefferson Police Chief Mark Clouse urge residents to contact their electric company to report a downed power line or if they don’t have power to their home.
