Iowans who had extra time to renew their motor vehicle registration or their driver’s license because of the COVID-19 pandemic should be aware of upcoming deadlines for these transactions.
Guthrie County Treasurer Marci Schreck says motor vehicle renewals must be done by August 31st if your registration expired in the months of January to July of this year, and beginning on August 24th all noncommercial driver’s licenses will be subject to the expiration date printed on the license, with a 60-day grace period. Those who have purchased a vehicle between March 16th and July 25th must transfer the title by August 24th to avoid penalties. Schreck mentions the current operating procedures for her office and the Guthrie County Courthouse, “Due to the ongoing concerns about the spread of COVID-19 we are encouraging our residents to utilize the online, mail, or dropbox options to conduct motor vehicle and property tax transactions. The driver’s license is going to remain by appointment only and if they do still want to come into the courthouse just be aware that face masks are required in the courthouse.”
Schreck explains that her employees aren’t required to wear face masks when inside their offices because they are spacious enough for social distancing, but they do wear masks when traveling through hallways. Schreck thanks the public for their patience and cooperation while COVID-19 restrictions are in place.
