Over a month since a fire greatly impacted three downtown businesses in Guthrie Center, those businesses are progressing towards operating as before.
The fire occurred in a second story apartment above the Strawberry Patch women’s clothing and gift store on the night of June 24th, which caused extensive damage to the store as well as water and smoke damage to the Cabbage Rose restaurant and Dowd Drug pharmacy that surround it. Dave and Marlene Lake, who own both Strawberry Patch and Cabbage Rose, have announced that they are reopening the clothing store temporarily in the dining area of Cabbage Rose, beginning today and tomorrow from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. The business has salvaged 800 pieces of clothing which have all been professionally cleaned by CRDN of West Des Moines.
Dowd Drug moved across the street immediately after the fire to a vacant store space at 310 State Street to continue to provide pharmacy services. They have also recently announced that they will reopen their gift department in another vacant space on the west corner of the block across the street from the original Dowd Drug location. Cabbage Rose only missed one weekend of serving carryout meals, as they have been open since July 5th for preordered carry-out meals on Sundays.
