The most recent COVID-19 proclamation from Governor Kim Reynolds has allowed the suspension of delinquent property tax penalties to expire as of July 31st, four months after they would normally have been imposed.

Guthrie County Treasurer Marci Schreck says about $100,000 in property taxes are yet to be paid by residents, “We ended the fiscal year with a half of a percent unpaid so I was pretty happy with that considering there was no tax sale. In past years when there is a tax sale that percent is usually under a quarter of a percent but we were pretty happy with a half a percent, it was actually under a half of a percent that was left.”

The state waived the requirement for counties to hold a tax sale on parcels for which taxes are delinquent, and Schreck says the county has no plans to still hold a sale this year. A 1.5% monthly interest rate is now applied for those delinquent taxes, and Schreck reminds residents that the first half of this year’s property tax payments are due September 30th.
