The Greene County Courthouse is fully open to the public once again.

The courthouse in Jefferson was closed to the public in late March, following the COVID-19 community spreadin Iowa. The courthouse partially reopened to the public at the beginning of June, with only one door accessible for entry and another door as an exit. The public restrooms were also closed.

As of Monday afternoon, the three entry doors to the courthouse, as well as the public restrooms, can be used by the public. Greene County Supervisor Chair John Muir explains why the Board felt comfortable fully reopening the courthouse.

“Well the biggest reason (is) we were asked last week by a couple of department heads when we were looking at going forward with that. We decided to get back to some sense of normalcy (and) trying to work our way back to how things were (pre-COVID-19). I think we did a good job and try to manage people and their movement. But I think we’ve gotten through the rush of people coming back in for driver’s license, treasurer’s office and everything. So we’re going to open it up and see. I mean we can reverse our direction if there’s issues.”

Muir adds hand sanitizer and bacterial wipes will remain on each floor of the courthouse and masks are strongly encouraged to be worn when inside. Muir advises members of the public to follow what each department requests for in-person visits.
