There have been recent reports of more young people contracting COVID-19.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has reported the more vulnerable population for the virus are those over 65 and who have underlying health conditions such as a chronic illness. Family Practice Physician Dr. Laurie Connolly with Greene County Medical Center says there has been a new surge of COVID-19 cases among younger people, ranging from 18-64 – which is about 60-percent of the U.S. population – that are the ones working and going to different places without wearing a mask and contributing to the spread of the virus.
“So it’s not any surprise that we’re seeing more (of the) virus among younger people. It makes sense, I mean you think you’re invincible when you’re 18, 21 years-old, you don’t have as much to worry truly about the virus yourself. The 21 year-olds aren’t likely to die from COVID.”
Dr. Connolly urges younger people to do their part to flatten the curve of the pandemic by wearing a mask when attending social gatherings and practice social distance of at least six feet apart from others.
