The Greene County Sheriff’s Office was busy last weekend responding to several alleged incidents from a party near Jefferson.

Sheriff Jack Williams says his office received several calls during the two-day Iowa Chill Summer Bash event at River Farm Recreation in the 900 block of 222nd Street near Jefferson. Williams reported on Monday at the Greene County Board of Supervisors meeting that he was denied access to the grounds Friday night by property owner Craig Flack, but due to the number of calls law enforcement responded to, they were granted access Saturday night.

Williams says on Saturday night, he had all eight deputies patrolling the grounds. Williams notes that evening, there were 11 individuals that were drugged, mostly from a pure form of ecstasy called Molle, along with three alleged sexual assaults, deputies also seized several drug-related items, assisted medical personnel with two unresponsive individuals and cited several 18-20 year-old individuals who had consumed alcohol below the legal age. Williams says one individual under the age of 18 that consumed alcohol was sent to juvenile court, three 18-20 year-olds who were arrested for OWI, but who had a wristband on signifying they were 21 and over. 

Williams points out no alcohol was served at the two-day event, as it was promoted as a bring your own beverage gathering, and no one was supposed to be admitted under the age of 18. Williams says they worked well with the hired security staff, who he commended for doing the best job they could, but said they were understaffed for the estimated 400-500 people who were there. Williams says no criminal charges are being sought against Flack and further charges against some of the partygoers are pending drug and alcohol test results. Williams says they were given permission to be on-site for the next event that will be held from August 14th-16th.

Following Monday’s discussion with the Supervisors, it was decided that the Board wanted to move forward with establishing a social host ordinance, which was drafted last year but the Board didn’t approve it. The ordinance would make it a criminal offense for someone to host a gathering and knowingly permit individuals under the age of 21 to consume alcohol, controlled substances or illegal prescription drugs.
