In a game packed full of nerves and excitement, the Adel-Desoto-Minburn Tigers were able to defeat the Bondurant Bluejays by the score of 3-1 to win the Class 3A – Substate 7 championship and advance to the state baseball tournament in Des Moines next week! This is the second consecutive year that the Tigers have been able to make the state tournament, but things weren’t easy against a tough Bondurant team.
ADM took a 3-0 lead into the 7th inning, but things got interesting, with Bondurant drawing a walk, error, and two hit batters to score a run. With the bases loaded and two outs in the inning, junior Grant Garton was brought into the game to face cleanup Nathan Anderson, a .500 plus hitter. Garton was able to strikeout Anderson to finish the inning and give the Tigers a win.
ADM got a massive starting performance from ace Zach Fuller, who was to go 6 2/3 innings, giving up four hits, one run, and five strikeouts as well. His ability to mix up speeds was the major difference, keeping Bondurant all balance all night long.
Fuller helped his own cause in the first inning, after a Bondurant error got ADM into scoring position, he was able to drive a pitch out to left field for an RBI single to get the Tigers into the scoring column to take the lead 1-0. ADM tacked on two more runs in the second inning, after a bad throw from the Bondurant shortstop on a hard hit grounder would score juniors Ethan Juergens and Luke Curry to take their 3-0 lead.
The big difference in the game was in the errors, with ADM only having one in the seventh inning, while Bondurant had four errors in the game. They would prove to be costly, as the Tigers were able to score all their runs due to errors.
The Tigers have outscored their three in the postseason by the score of 25-3, as the Tigers got excellent pitching and hit the cover off of the ball as well.
Bondurant concludes their season at 7-11 while ADM moves to 12-7. The Tigers will be scheduled to play next Tuesday at Principal Park, as the Tigers will be looking to continue to play at a high rate while they have peaked at the right time of the year.
