At the most recent Dallas County Supervisors meeting, Dallas County Treasurer Mitch Hambleton discussed his final report for fiscal year 2020.

Hambleton first noted that the revenue generated by the Motor Vehicle Department has once again continued its steady incline, growing to over $1.1 million from just over $1 million the previous year. Hambleton said this is likely a direct result to the always-growing population of Dallas County, which has led to more people needing new titles, license plates, and other new resident functions his office provides. Back in 2014, the motor vehicle function generated $719,000, and it has increased each year since. The expenses have also risen over that time, so the total profit of the department for FY20 was over $118,000.

Meanwhile the tax function saw a large dip from last year. However, Hambleton said 2019 was a bit of an anomalous year at over $1 million in investment income, and the $650,000 figure from this year is more indicative of what to expect. The tax department did remain profitable, though, at $222,000 for the fiscal year. Finally, Hambleton offered his last driver’s license report, since it’s now run by the Iowa Department of Transportation. He said the licensing department once again saw a net loss of $47,000, though that was part of steady improvement from previous years. He also pointed out that the County did about half of the driver’s license business as they did the previous year, which was directly related to only operating the function for half of the time.

Overall, the Treasurer’s Department reported a profit of $363,562.87, which was a steep decline from FY19, though still a stark improvement from 2014 when they had a net loss of nearly $180,000. Hambleton was proud of the work his department has done during his time in office to turn those figures around.
