Greene County finished the home portion of the COVID-19 abbreviated high school softball season on Thursday night with a 4-3 loss to Roland-Story (Story City) in Heart of Iowa Activities Conference play. Coach Tom Kennedy’s team scored two runs in the first inning and another in the third for a 3-0 lead, but R-S scored two in the sixth and two in the seventh to complete a two-game HOIAC sweep of the Rams. Greene County had two runners on base with one out in the seventh, but could not score.

The Rams had 10 hits, including doubles from senior Tieryn Tucker and sophomore Carmyn Paup. The latter finished with three hits, while the former had two hits and two runs batted in. Freshman Emma Hoyle had a pair of singles and senior Izzy Bravard, freshman Emma Stream, and freshman Alexa Peters each singled once.

Seven errors hurt the Rams as two of the four R-S runs were not earned. Hoyle took the pitching loss, allowing nine hits and one walk with two strikeouts.

The regular season finishes at Nevada on Monday, July 13. Greene County will take a 3-10 record into that contest, then face Kuemper Catholic in Carroll on Wed., July 15 at 7 p.m. in the opening round of the Class 3A postseason.
