A proposed noise ordinance for the City of Jefferson is anticipated to be considered by the City Council next week.

The noise ordinance was first discussed at the City Council meeting on June 9th. Several citizens attended the meeting and brought up concerns about portions of the ordinance, such as the hours that residents are plowing snow on their property, decibel levels for children yelling and playing outside, and motorcycle noise. The ordinance was brought back to the police committee to address those concerns.

Mayor Matt Gordon shared the updated ordinance with Raccoon Valley Radio, which can be viewed by clicking the link below. Police Chief Mark Clouse says the decibel levels that are in the proposed ordinance are reasonable, since that information was compiled from other cities’ ordinances.

“Instead of raising all those numbers up right away to a higher decibel being allowed and then a year from now going, ‘That’s too much,’ and trying to back it down the scope. I would rather here and then in the future if you need to open that up a little bit more that’s much easier to do than dialing it back.”

The ordinance must go through three readings by the Council before it can take effect.
