The PCM (Monroe) high school baseball and softball teams were in Jefferson last night in Heart of Iowa Activities Conference baseball and softball with the Greene County Rams. Runs were plentiful as the Rams won the softball game 10-9 on KG98 and streamed on www.raccoonvalleyradio.com. PCM overcame a 6-1 deficit after four innings to win the baseball game 10-6.

Greene County improved to 3-9 overall and in the HOIAC in softball while the Mustangs fell to 4-13. All the scoring took place in the first four innings as the team traded leads. PCM scored six times in the top of the fourth to take a lead of 9-5, but Greene County countered with five runs in the bottom of the frame and neither scored the rest of the way. The game ended with PCM runners at second and third bases on a foul pop out to first base.

Freshman Emma Hoyle doubled, singled twice, and was the winning pitcher. The double came to deep left center in the first inning and was the first extra base hit this season for the Rams. Freshman Alexa Peters and junior Karissa Stephenson each had two singles and 10 different Rams had at least one hit. The team piled up 14 hits in all with three runs batted in for senior Kyla Beyers and two for sophomore Carmyn Paup. Peters, senior Tieryn Tucker, and freshman Emma Stream each had one RBI.

PCM had four errors and the Rams were charged with three.

The baseball was played at Allensworth Field and things looked good early for the Rams as they took a 6-1 lead after three innings and that held up through four strong innings of pitching from senior Nick Breon, who made his first mound start of the season after a nagging knee injury caused him to miss significant time this season. The Mustangs scored four runs in the fifth and five in the sixth, while shutting out the Rams the last four innings. PMC improved to 7-7 while Greene County fell to 2-10 overall and in the conference.

The Rams had eight hits to 12 for PCM, and both teams were charged with two errors. Junior Alex Roberts took the pitching loss and sophomore Joe Carey finished up. Senior Caden Lowmiller doubled to the right field warning track and knocked in three runs on the night. Breon had a double, single, and two RBI. Senior Tyler Teeples singled twice, and sophomore Justin Stream had a run batted in.

The final home games of the COVID-19 shortened season for Greene County softball and baseball are tonight with the Roland-Story Norsemen. The varsity baseball game will be broadcast around 7:30 p.m. on KG98 and streamed on www.raccoonvalleyradio.com from Allensworth Field.
