The COVID-19 abbreviated high school baseball and softball season may have seemed like it just got started, but the regular season for the Greene County teams has just over one week remaining. The softball postseason begins on Wednesday, July 15 for Coach Tom Kennedy’s team, while Coach Matt Paulsen’s baseball Rams open postseason play on Friday, July 17.
Entering the upcoming week, Greene County is 2-7 in softball and 1-8 on the baseball diamond. The softball team broke a seven game losing streak two days ago with a 3-0, one-hit upset of Gilbert. The baseball team started with seven losses in a row before winning 13-2 in six innings by the 10-run rule on July 2 at Jewell vs. So. Hamilton.
Greene County is assigned to Class 3A Region 2 in softball and the Rams make the short trip to Carroll to face Kuemper Catholic on July 15 at 7 p.m. The Knights, members of the Hawkeye 10 Conference, enter this week with a 5-9 record. The winner faces either number two ranked Humboldt or Southeast Valley (Gowrie) in Humboldt on July 17 at 7 p.m. MOC-Floyd Valley, Cherokee, Bishop Heelan (Sioux City), and OABCIG (Ida Grove) are the other teams in Region 2.
In baseball, the exact district pairings should be out this week. What the Rams do know is that of the eight teams in 3A Substate 8, they have the fewest wins and Dallas Center-Grimes has the most victories. Harlan Community also has a winning record with Creston, Carroll, Denison-Schleswig, Atlantic, and Glenwood rounding out the Substate. Postseason play in 3A baseball begins on Friday, July 17.
KG98 and www.raccoonvalleyradio.com will follow both Greene County teams on the tournament trail.
