The first time Greene County and South Hamilton met on the softball diamond was just over two weeks ago and the Hawks spoiled the Rams’ home opener by a 7-1 score. Last night was the second and final meeting this season between the two Heart of Iowa Activities Conference members, and SH won by a final of 11-1 in five innings by the 10 run 4d in Jewell. The are 1-7 with seven losses in a row. The Hawks improved to 4-5.
Greene County went the first seven games of the season without an extra base hit, an almost unheard of statistic. Coach Tom Kennedy’s team entered Thursday’s contest with a team batting average of .197. The Rams did have eight hits, but all were singles and the streak without an extra base hit to start the season has reached eight games.
Freshman pitcher Emma Hoyle has been battling hip and back issues. She surrendered 11 hits in less than five full innings. The defense was charged with three errors. Hoyle led the team at at the plate by going three for three with the only Greene County run batted in.
Kyla Beyers had two hits for the Rams with one each from Karissa Stephenson, Izzy Bravard, and Emma Stream.
SH had five extra base hits. Four were doubles and Mackenzie Grady homered in the bottom of the fifth to end the game by the 10-run rule.
Next up for Greene County is Gilbert tonight on KG98 and streamed on www.raccoonvalleyradio.com from the City Diamond on E. Lincolnway in Jefferson. Coverage begins shortly after 7 p.m. with first pitch around 7:30 p.m. The Tigers overcame a 3-0 deficit to nip the Rams 4-3 in Gilbert two weeks ago.
