Coach Tom Kennedy’s Greene County High School softball team began this season with a 6-5 victory in Des Moines at Saydel High School. The 1-0 start has been followed by six straight losses. The latest took place last night when the Rams met the Eagle for the second and final time this season, this time at the City Diamond on E. Lincolnway in Jefferson. Saydel won 4-2 to even its record at 7-7, thanks in large part to seven Greene County errors.
The Eagles scored a run in the first without a hit, taking advantage of a pair of errors by the Rams. Greene County tied the score on an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth on a SAC fly to deep center by freshman Emma Hoyle, scoring freshman Alexa Peters, who opened the frame with a single, the first of just two hits the Rams would muster. Saydel countered with three runs in the seventh (one earned), while the Rams closed the gap to 4-2 when freshman Olivia Shannon singled and later scored on a wild pitch.
Hoyle was the tough luck losing pitcher. In seven innings, she allowed four hits and one earned run. Hoyle walked one batter and struck out two.
Greene County has been held without an extra base hit in all seven games this season. Eighth grader Mariah Cockerham did not allow a base runner Wednesday night until the twelfth hitter she faced and that was on an error. The first hit by the Rams came leading off the bottom of the sixth. The first six spots in the Greene County batting order went a combined zero for 16.
Tonight has Greene County softball and baseball playing South Hamilton in Jewell. The Hawks won on June 17 in Jefferson in the first softball meeting this season between the two by a score of 7-1.
