Greene County High School’s baseball team is 0-7 overall and in Heart of Iowa Activities Conference play after losing 2-1 to Saydel (Des Moines) in Jefferson at Allensworth Field. The Rams are 0-2 vs. the Eagles this season and both losses are by the 2-1 score.
Senior Brent Riley hurled a gem, but was tagged with the loss. He went all seven innings and gave up no earned runs on three hits and a walk. He hit one batter with a pitch and struck the Eagles out five times. Riley scored the lone Greene County run in the fourth on an unintentional delayed double steal.
Riley, Bryce Stalder, Brayden Roberts, Peyton Kinsey, Joe Carey, Caden Lowmiller, and pinch hitter Nick Breon all singled. Breon has played sparingly this season due to a knee injury. He was an all-conference and all district performer a season ago.
Mason Hicks was the winning pitcher and Garrett Shinn picked up the save for Saydel, now 6-9. The Eagles scored unearned runs in each of the first two innings and made them stand up despite being out hit seven to three.
Greene County goes to Jewell tonight to face South Hamilton in HOIAC baseball and softball. The baseball Rams fell 10-4 on June 17 to the Hawks.
