Nevada won Heart of Iowa Activities Conference softball and baseball games in Jefferson vs. Greene County on Monday night. The softball final at the City Diamond on E. Lincolnway was 6-1 while the baseball final was 5-3 at Allensworth Field in Jefferson.

In softball, the Cubs struck early and scored twice in the first, three times in the second inning, and once in the third. The lone Greene County run came in the third inning. Coach Tom Kennedy’s Rams have lost five in a row and stand at 1-5 overall and in conference play while the Cubs improved to 6-2. Nevada out hit Greene County seven to six and the Rams were charged with three errors to two for the Cubs.

Freshman Emma Hoyle took the pitching loss. She had one strikeout and two walks, and all the runs were earned.

The Rams have not yet had an extra base hit this season. Six different Greene County players each had a single on Monday night with the run batted in going to Hoyle.

First year head coach Matt Paulsen and the Greene County High School baseball team are still looking for their first wins. The Rams are 0-6 overall and in conference action while the Cubs improved to 3-5. Greene County had eight hits, seven singles and a double, while the Cubs had six hits including two doubles.

Freshman catcher Brayden Roberts had a double and two singles to lead the Rams at the plate. Bryce Stalder, Brent Riley, Caden Lowmiller, Cameron Miller, and Justin Stream each had one base hit. Miller and Stream each drove in a run.

Senior Tyler Teeples had a strong mound effort going 5-2/3 innings and allowing four runs, two earned. He struck five batters out while walking just one and hitting one with a pitch. Alex Roberts went the last 1/1-3 innings and allowed one earned run.

The Saydel (Des Moines) team visit Jefferson Wednesday night. KG98 and www.raccoonvalleyradio.com will broadcast the softball game around 7;30 p.m.

The Iowa High School Athletic Association released baseball Substate assignments and Greene County is in Class 3A Substate 8 with Dallas Center-Grimes, Carroll, Creston, Atlantic, Glenwood, Harlan, and Denison-Schleswig. District play will begin on Friday, July 17. The exact pairings won’t be released until after the coaches meet to seed the teams for the postseason.
