Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds recently signed several pieces of legislation into law, including a unanimously passed bill that focuses on a popular summer profession for kids.
House File 2238, popularly known as the “Lemonade Stand Bill,” was one of 29 bills signed by the Governor Thursday. It deals with youth entrepreneurship, and more specifically it prevents cities and counties from shutting down children’s curbside refreshment stands for lack of proper permits. State Representative Chris Hagenow, (R) District 19, helped author the bill in the House, as he found requiring a 10-year-old to obtain a vendor permit to sell lemonade on a hot summer day was a silly request. He noted to Raccoon Valley Radio that there are few things as American as a kid’s lemonade stand, and he felt it was important to encourage youth to learn about business and entrepreneurship.
HF2238 passed 96-0 in the House on February 24th and made it out of the Senate committee phase just days before the Legislature went on its COVID-19 induced hiatus. It was reintroduced when the session reconvened and was passed 47-0 in the Senate on June 13th.
