When the 2020 Iowa legislative session finally came to an end, it marked the completion of the 12-year career in office for House District 19 Representative Chris Hagenow.

The Urbandale resident announced earlier this year that he would not be seeking reelection in November, citing a desire to spend more time with his family. Hagenow recently gave his thoughts on his more than a decade of public service, saying it was some of the most fulfilling times of his life. “There’s, without question, just an incredible honor to serve. I’ve met so many people along the way and did so many things to try and help. Not just the big issues, but being involved in some of the individual concerns that people have. It is a humbling thing to sit in the chair and cast a vote, or have a constituent say, ‘Hey, I really need your help with something right now,’ and to be able to get a positive result is just an amazing thing. And to be a part of all that, I’m incredibly thankful for it.”

Hagenow only served one term as the District 19 Representative, which he took over from former Representative Ralph Watts of Adel who retired in 2018. Prior to that, Hagenow represented the 59th District from 2009-12 and the redistricted 43rd District from 2013-18. He will be succeeded by a 22-year-old, with Democrat Nick Miller of Polk City and Republican Carter Nordman of Adel both vying for the open seat.
