The month of June is typically spent by many thanking their fathers or other male figures for the roles they play in their lives, but people can also spend that time making sure those loved ones stay that way.

It’s Men’s Health Month, a time to encourage men to make better health and lifestyle choices, while reminding them they don’t have to do it alone. Dr. Josh Strehle of Guthrie County Hospital and Clinics says you can support the men in your life by having healthy habits yourself, like eating fruits and vegetables every day and limiting foods and drinks high in calories, sugar, salt, fat, and alcohol, keeping regular physical activity, and quitting smoking. Strehle adds that a large contributor to physical health is mental health, and he recommends watching out for signs that someone is suffering from stress, anxiety, and other issues, “Men are less likely than women are to seek help regarding mental health, and really health in general, which is quite unfortunate. And so for any women or family members, you know we all have men in our lives in some way, shape or form. Really for those younger men, since one of the main issues is accidents and suicide.”

Dr. Strehle also emphasizes the importance of having regular checkups with your physician, and keeping them informed of any changes in your family’s medical history.
