The runway extension project at the Perry Municipal Airport had been placed on the backburner over the last several months, but at the most recent Perry City Council meeting it was one of the bigger topics of conversation.
The Council approved several action items related to the project, including an agreement with City Engineers Bolton and Menk to work on the design of the runway, and a pair of grant applications to the Federal Aviation Administration that would total nearly $1.8 million. More importantly, City Administrator Sven Peterson notes that the timeline for the project is coming into focus. “Hopefully we’ll be able to get that runway designed from Bolton and Menk (soon), and probably early September we’ll be putting that out to bid. Hopefully with enough time to get a contractor on site to move some of the dirt yet this fall, which would mean there’s a pretty good possibility of paving next year for the new runway.”
The project involves adding 1,500 feet to the existing 4,000-foot runway, which will allow for a wider variety of aircraft and in turn increase business. Peterson adds, there shouldn’t be much disruption to the airport while construction is in progress, though the City and Fixed Based Operators Walter Aviation will keep the public informed.
