Motorists passing through Perry have likely already noticed that Highway 144, otherwise known as 1st Street, has been disrupted by construction this week.
The City and Iowa Department of Transportation say the project should be finished by the end of the week, so they ask for the public’s patience as the work progresses. Perry City Administrator Sven Peterson notes that the project has been highly anticipated, as it involves a complete asphalt overlay from Highway 141 to the north end of town, as well as restriping the thoroughfare. Peterson reminds motorists that once construction is complete, Highway 144 will be reconfigured into a three-lane road through town, with two driving lanes, a center turn lane, and marked shoulders.
He also encourages the public to stay alert in the work area. “This week, with all of the construction going on, 1st Street remains open, but that probably will change daily as far as lane configurations and where you can drive. So it’s best to just try and avoid 1st Street to reduce the amount of traffic. But if you do have to travel on 1st Street please just use some extra caution, take it slow to help keep those construction workers safe and other drivers safe.”
