Protests around the state, the nation, and the world continue in response to recent cases of police brutality against African American individuals, and Perry Police Chief Eric Vaughn encourages protestors to keep local law enforcement in the loop when a rally is planned.

Vaughn says there haven’t been any protests so far in Perry, but he emphasizes that it’s the people’s right if they want to publicly voice their displeasure with the system. He even goes so far as to say protesting is one of the most American things an individual or group can do to enact social or political change. Prior to holding a rally, though, Vaughn encourages protestors to inform their police departments of their plans so officers can help with logistics, and he asks that people remain civil and keep the protests peaceful. “You know, if somebody wants to do that (in Perry), I encourage them (to) give us a call and we’ll work through that. We just want to make sure that those are peaceful protests, and we don’t have some of the damage and violence they’ve had in other places. Because I don’t know that that’s an effective tool for either one of us to get our point across, or to get change occurring.”
