The Adel Police Department is investigating an incident of criminal mischief, related to hate speech graffiti that was found around the City.
Police Chief Gordy Shepherd says the report was made the morning of Monday, June 8th, after racist and homophobic slang was spray painted on a residence. Shepherd says the responding officer gathered information at the scene and a potential suspect has been identified. However, he says the investigation is ongoing and no arrests have been made.
In response to the hate speech, members of the Adel community have decided to gather in solidarity Wednesday evening for a public rally. It will take place at 7 p.m. at the Adel Stage and Pavilion. Speakers will include Bishop Ron Woods, Iowa and Nebraska NAACP President Betty Andrews, and local pastors and community leaders. Attendees are encouraged to make signs of support to bring to the event, though they’re asked to keep things family friendly. The public is also asked to maintain social distancing and wear masks.
Raccoon Valley Radio will bring you more information on the graffiti incident as it becomes official.
