The Greene County Board of Supervisors met Monday in regular session.
Greene County Engineer Wade Weiss gave a report during open forum. He updated the Board on various road projects, as well as the Mahanay Memorial Carillon Tower. He said the inside of the bell tower has been repainted and an air conditioning unit has been installed on the observation deck. Weiss noted that the donor sign for the bells is ready to be installed soon.
Greene County Attorney Thomas Laehn also gave an update. He said his office currently has 86 pending criminal cases, with another ten indictable cases to be filed. He also spoke on the recently passed legislation by the Iowa Congress. Laehn said House File 2502 would essentially take away county or city discretion of weapons brought into a county or city owned facility. Currently, the Greene County Courthouse prohibits anyone from entering the building with a firearm. Instead, Laehn said the Legislature will require any county or city government who wants to continue that methodology to have an individual screen every person that enters a facility and an individual must be on site as an armed security guard. The bill is waiting to be signed into law.
Next, the Board approved a final pay estimate to Midwest Mechanical Industrial Services for work completed in drainage district 14. However, during the completion hearing engineering firm Bolton and Menk noted about $7,000 in damages from crop compaction to other incidentals were approved by the Board following completion of the project. The Board also set July 14th at 9am as the hearing date for about 110 acres to possibly be annexed into DD14, along with the classification schedule for the district.
Finally, the Board approved the first pay estimate of $193,000 of the $261,000 project to Healy Excavating from Lake City for work done in drainage district 191.
