With Memorial Day weekend upon us, it’s prime season for outdoor cooking. However, Perry Fire Chief Chris Hinds reminds people to be careful with their grills and recreational fire pits so as not to spoil their revels with a house fire.

Hinds emphasizes that the most important safety tip he can offer in regards to grilling is to never leave a fire unattended. He acknowledges that when most people finish cooking they want to start eating right away, but he advises them to take a minute to ensure the fire is out. “After you’re done with your grill, you’ve got to remember that you’ve got to continue to take care of business and extinguish your fire. You know it’s nice to let things burn on out, but you can’t leave the lid open and let things go, or you can’t just leave it sitting on the deck up next to the house or something like that.”

Hinds says an unattended grill could be knocked over by the wind, children, or animals playing around it, and many house fires at this time of year are started that way.
