Though below average rainfall was observed in this week’s Iowa Crop Progress and Conditions Report, moisture levels are appearing mostly adequate, with no drought conditions shown across the state.
The report released by the U.S. Department of Agriculture National Agricultural Statistics Service states that in Iowa topsoil moisture levels rated 3 percent very short, 16 percent short, 78 percent adequate, and 3 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture levels rated 2 percent very short, 8 percent short, 85 percent adequate, and 5 percent surplus. Pasture condition was also rated 65 percent good to excellent, as pastures and hay fields are greening up. A preliminary weather summary from State Climatologist Justin Glisan notes that the statewide average precipitation last week was less than two tenths of an inch, while the normal is over nine-tenths of an inch. The weekly update from the U.S. Drought Monitor released Thursday shows no drought conditions have been reported in Iowa since September 24th.
