U.S. Congresswoman Cindy Axne

The Congresswoman for Iowa’s Third District is expressing concerns about Governor Kim Reynolds allowing many businesses to reopen including Dallas County as of her Wednesday proclamation.

Representative Cindy Axne (D) tells Raccoon Valley Radio she shares the Governor’s desire in reopening Iowa, but she feels her proclamation allowing certain businesses to reopen across the state is counterproductive overall. She points out that residents from hot spots like Dallas and Polk counties could be travelling to more rural counties like Guthrie and unknowingly spreading the virus and vice versa. Axne says Iowa should look more closely at its case number trend rather than on a national scale, “Just because we’re seeing an overall number slightly decrease in some of the bigger cities and that of course impacts the whole numbers across the country it doesn’t mean that we don’t have issues to address in other parts that are now becoming the bigger hot spots. And so I don’t believe that COVID-19 unfortunately in Iowa is in our rearview mirror and we really can’t consider it past tense.”

Axne compared having the varied restrictions throughout the state to when airplanes had smoking and non-smoking sections, saying that everyone eventually will be breathing in the same air. You can hear more from Axne during today’s Let’s Talk Guthrie County program on air and at raccoonvalleyradio.com.
