Multiple law enforcement agencies pursued a vehicle through Guthrie and Dallas counties Thursday morning, whose speed exceeded 100 miles per hour.

According to the Guthrie County Sheriff’s Office, at about 10:35 a.m. deputies were called by Audubon County to assist in locating a silver Mercedes car that was allegedly involved in two attempted burglaries. The deputies located the described vehicle at the intersection of Highway 44 and Justice Avenue west of Guthrie Center, driving 83 miles per hour. The deputies then pursued the vehicle with their lights and siren on, and the car continued to elude east into Panora, where it turned south on Wagon Road, then traveled east on gravel roads to Linden. Near the intersection of 238th Lane and Yellow Avenue, a safe and a bag of bolt cutters and vice grips were thrown from the vehicle. An Iowa Department of Transportation vehicle clocked the Mercedes at 102 miles per hour.

The vehicle eventually stopped at the intersection of 270th Street and El Paso Avenue, north of Redfield. The driver, 34-year-old James Raymond Baenisch of Des Moines, was arrested and charged with third degree burglary and eluding, both class D felonies; driving while barred, possession of burglar’s tools, and carrying weapons, all aggravated misdemeanors; and reckless driving, a simple misdemeanor. He was taken to the Guthrie County Jail, where he later posted a $5,000 bond. Two passengers were arrested on outstanding warrants from Polk County and were transported to the Polk County Jail.
