The Board of Control of the Iowa High School Athletic Association met Tuesday via teleconference. Wrestling was the sport the Board focused on, approving five recommendations from the IHSAA’s wrestling advisory committee.

The changes are:

  • To allow schools to opt out of dual team postseason events by the first competition date. There has not previously been a choice.
  • To qualify the 16 sectional champions and the next eight highest-ranked teams (by the Iowa Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association) for the regional dual team tournament in Class 2A and Class 1A. If a sectional champion opted out of dual team postseason, the next highest-ranking team would qualify. Previously, there were 32 qualifying teams and they were the first and second place teams at sectional tournaments.
  • To reduce the state traditional tournament seeding criteria regarding common opponents from two points back to one point. It was one point in 2019 and two points in 2020.
  • To seed all 16 wrestlers in each bracket for the state traditional tournament. Previously, only the top eight in each bracket were seeded and the rest were drawn in.
  • To allow host tournament directors to determine the length of sub-varsity matches at local regular season events.
  • All changes go into effect for the 2020-21 season.
