The Perry and Dawson fire departments pulled a vehicle from the Raccoon River Saturday morning, which had reportedly been put in there purposely Friday afternoon.
According to Perry Fire Chief Chris Hinds, Dallas County Sheriff’s deputies were called to a domestic situation at around 3:25 p.m., but instead found the partially submerged car near 125th Trail northwest of Dawson. The car belonged to Michael Schmitz of Dawson, who allegedly drove it into the river in a fit of anger. The officers requested aid from the local fire departments to pull it out. The car had been carried around 125 yards down river from its point of entry, and was stopped against a fallen tree about 20 feet away from the bank.
Hinds assessed the situation and thought it might require divers, so given the time of day he requested they hold off until the next morning. The deputies agreed, and crews met up at 9 a.m. Saturday with the car in the same place. Firefighters were able to use an extension ladder to safely climb on the roof of the car, and they successfully pulled it out with the help of Anytime Towing. The car was a total loss, and charges are pending for Schmitz. Raccoon Valley Radio will bring you more information as it becomes official.
