It’s a line from the Joni Mitchell tune “Big Yellow Taxi” from 50 years ago. “Don’t it always seem to go that you don’t know what you’ve got ’til it’s gone.”
Greene County head boys’ track & field coach Chad Morton likely doesn’t have a lot in common with Ms. Mitchell, but he reminds us of some of what we used to take for granted, or even didn’t care for and now wish we had, prior to the COVID-19 Pandemic. “I was thinking the other day about going to Drake Relays and going to State. On the way down, you’re thinking about where you were going to park, and how long of a walk to Drake Stadium you would have. And, there’s a lot of people there and you’ve got to find a place to sit. And, I’m thinking, ‘Man, those things I think were kind of a pain, I wish they were here now!'”
The coach added, “It makes us all think about what we had and what we don’t have now, and appreciate the things we did have. Hopefully, we’ll get back to that and we’ll be able to do those things. This gives us time to reflect and just be happy and thankful for the things we do have.”
