There is hope there could still be an abbreviated high school spring sports season in Iowa. It’s far from a sure thing, but the Iowa High School Athletic Association and Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union issued a revised schedule for starting and finishing all high school spring sports IF schools in the state are allowed to resume classes on May 1. That decision will come from Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds later this month.
If school resumes May 1, practice for all spring sports in the state would also be allowed to begin on May 1. May 4 is the first competition date for track & field, golf, and tennis, and May 8 would be the first competition date for soccer. The postseason for all would start and end later than usual. Right now postseason host sites and state championship venues are currently set as previously announced, with changes and updates announced as they become available.
Greene County Activities Director Todd Gordon told Raccoon Valley Radio that a shortened season is better than no season. “If we can get back and have a season, at least the kids would be able to compete.”
The A.D. added there have been a lot of emails, texts, and phone calls the last two days as Gordon and other Activities Directors plan to have a short season of track & field, soccer, and golf and try to make schedules fit the allotted time frame. Greene County does not have tennis, but some schools do. It is possible time away from school would be extended past May 1, which would change this scenario.
