All high school classes and school-related activities in Iowa are on hold due to COVID-19. It remains to be seen if an abbreviated schedule of sports will be held this spring, but if Greene County has a shortened boys’ soccer season, senior goalkeeping Cael Fisher will be among those players head coach Carl Behne will count on.
The Rams qualified for the Class 1A State Tournament a season ago, in what was just the second season Greene County had its own soccer teams, and Fisher helped the Rams get there in his first season minding the net. Coach Behne told Raccoon Valley Radio that since Cael is a kicker in football, a spot-up shooter and defender in basketball, and a soccer goalie, there are some commonalities. “He’s very confident in himself and his abilities and he can harness that. When you’re a kicker, you’ve got a lot going on around you, but you’ve got to be mentally prepared for what’s coming in front of you. As a spot shooter and a defensive-minded player in basketball, you’re very focused on a task and making that happen for yourself and your team.”
On being a goalie, Behne added, “As a goalkeeper, there can be times when you’re standing around for quite a few minutes with little or no action, but all of a sudden a deep pass comes up the middle, a defender is caught on his heels, and it’s you and that offensive player and you’ve got to be mentally ready now! Cael then also pulls in some of those attributes I mention earlier that help him be a solid goalkeeper.”
