March is National Women’s History Month, and two Jefferson women are considered stand-outs in a male-dominated profession.
Amelia Carman and Sydney Schiltz are two of the only three females in the history of the Jefferson Volunteer Fire Department. Carman has served for four years and she talks about why she joined the fire department.
“I have always liked to give back to the community, and also my sister actually lost a house to a house fire. So it is a great way to give back and try to help out as much as possible.”
Schiltz is a full-time student at Iowa Central Community College in Fort Dodge and she says she hasn’t been to too many fire scenes, but the other members have been respectful to her and Carman, and they give helpful pointers in any situation. Schiltz encourages other women to join because she feels the department is like one big family.
“I think it takes a strong woman to step up because you do see it on TV, on all the shows it’s mostly just a male predominate field. But if it’s something that you have a passion for helping people and they’re looking for someone to fill a spot in the community, then go for it.”
Anyone with questions about being a part of the fire department, or other ways to get involved, can contact Jefferson City Hall at 515-386-3111.
