As COVID-19 has sparked some confusion over deadlines for certain taxes and other filings, the Guthrie County Treasurer’s Office seeks to clarify what the deadline is for the second half of fiscal year 2020 property taxes.
County Treasurer Marci Schreck says she’s received many calls from the public asking whether the property tax deadline has been pushed back a few weeks or even months, but she gives the truth of the matter, “Property taxes are still due March 31st and they are all still considered delinquent starting April 1st, however the Governor has changed the enforcement date for penalty. Penalty is waived from April 1st to April 16th, so penalty on the March 2020 taxes, it won’t be enforced until April 17th.”
Schreck says this is to alleviate any added expenses Iowans may have if they are delinquent on paying their property taxes. She notes property taxes can be paid online at the Iowa Treasurer’s Office website, by mail, or by dropping the payment off at the drop box on the east entrance of the county courthouse. She adds that vehicle registration and driver’s license renewals have been waived for those that expired on or after January 16th, as most courthouses are closed to the public due to the governor’s public health emergency proclamation.
