Following the announcement of a confirmed novel coronavirus 2019 case in Dallas County Saturday, the Perry School District is taking some precautions to stem the spread of the pandemic.

Perry Schools Superintendent Clark Wicks tells Raccoon Valley Radio Sunday that all school events and practices have been cancelled until further notice. At this time the district plans to resume classes following their spring break on March 23rd. Wicks says the situation surrounding COVID-19 is fluid, and determination of resuming activities and any other decisions will be had through discussion with county public health officials.

Governor Kim Reynolds announced Saturday that there is one confirmed case of COVID-19 in Dallas County, of a county resident between the ages of 61-80. The source of the infection is unknown, which deems there is now “community spread” in Iowa, according to the state department of public health. There are now 18 cases of COVID-19 in Iowa, and Governor Reynolds recommends that gatherings of more than 250 people should not be held or attended, though she does not recommend school closures.
