The deadline to file for the state and federal offices in the June primary election has come and gone, and there will be an assortment of contested races for Dallas County voters to consider.
For the local races, neither party will feature opposed primary elections, so the focus will be on the November general election. For House of Representatives District 19 — which covers much of Dallas County and the northwest corner of Polk — the representative next year will be a 22-year-old. Democrat Nick Miller of Polk City and Republican Carter Nordman of Adel are both currently 21 years old, and are vying for the seat being vacated by Republican Chris Hagenow, who is not running for reelection.
Meanwhile, House District 20 became contested on the final day candidates could file nomination forms. Incumbent Republican Ray Sorensen of Greenfield will now be opposed in November by Democrat Ryan Morrison of Stuart, who filed March 13th. The District includes all of Adair and Guthrie counties, the northwest part of Dallas including Perry, and a portion of Cass County. Finally, for State Senate District 10, incumbent Republican Jake Chapman of Adel will be opposed by Democrat Warren Varley of Stuart. The 10th District includes all of Adair and Guthrie counties, most of Dallas, and portions of Cass and Polk counties.
As for the federal elections, there are contested party races to oppose the incumbents for both U.S. Senate and U.S. House, District 3. Five Democrats, including Michael Franken, Kimberly Graham, Theresa Greenfield, Eddie Mauro, and Cal Woods, are vying in June for the right to run against incumbent Republican Senator Joni Ernst this November. There are two Republicans, Bill Schafer and former Congressman David Young, seeking to unseat incumbent Democratic Congresswoman Cindy Axne in the general election.
