The renovation of the McCreary Community Building in Perry is underway, and phase 1B is off to a fast start.
The contractor Ball Team Construction, began work on converting the theater into a workout room last week, and it didn’t take long before the space no longer resembled itself. City Administrator Sven Peterson says the theater conversion is probably the most complicated and time-consuming aspect of the current phase, so he found it encouraging that crews have been so efficient. In addition to the theater, within the next few weeks the contractor will be moving to the other biggest individual project in the current phase, the renovation of the gymnasium. Peterson advises the public that the work on the gym is expected to take around six weeks, so during that time there will be limited access.
Other aspects of phase 1B include locker room repairs, restroom and kitchen finishes, a new family restroom and child watch area, office renovations, door and frame repairs, and other miscellaneous finishes. Peterson says the renovations are exciting for the City, as they bring the nearly 40-year-old building into the 21st century. “Just speaking for myself, I spent a lot of time in the rec center growing up. I know kids and adults and everybody in the community really values that building and the services provided there. So (it’s) definitely a very important investment for us to make into the community for our residents and other visitors.”
The City is paying for the renovations in part through tax increment finance (TIF) funds, and Peterson reminds residents that they’ll have a public hearing at the March 16th City Council meeting to officially allocate the resources. Phase 1A included the heating and cooling systems in the building, and future phases include a new outdoor pool.
