It’s been a busy couple of weeks at the Iowa Secretary of State’s Office in Des Moines, and another local candidate has officially filed paperwork to be in this year’s state election.

Republican Jake Chapman of Adel will seek a third term representing Iowa’s 10th Senate District. Chapman was elected to the seat in 2012 at the age of 28, and was the first person to serve the redistricted area that includes all of Guthrie and Adair counties, most of Dallas, and portions of Cass and Polk counties. During his eight years in the Senate, he has championed controversial legislation such as the fetal heartbeat and 72-hour wait period bills related to abortion, and has opposed legislation such as the red flag firearm bill.

Chapman has one current challenger on the Democratic side — Stuart farmer and attorney Warren Varley — though he’s not expected to be opposed in the Republican primary. The state and federal filing period for the June 2nd primary election lasts until March 13th. The county office period runs through March 25th. Candidates can obtain paperwork from the Secretary of State’s website and turn them in at their offices in Des Moines.
