In the midst of all the controversial pieces of legislation currently being discussed during this general assembly, there’s one bill that made it through the first funnel that focuses on a popular summer profession for young kids.
State Representative Chris Hagenow, (R) District 19, helped author House File 2238, a bill dealing with youth entrepreneurship, referred to as the “lemonade stand bill.” Hagenow points out, there are frequently stories in the media where cities and counties have shut down children’s curbside refreshment stands for lack of proper permits, which he finds silly. “There’s few things that are as American as a kids lemonade stand on a summer day. And so we just passed a bill that would prevent cities from requiring permits for kids to go out and sell snacks and lemonade. Because frankly, we should be encouraging our youth to learn about business and entrepreneurship. But it was a good bill and we got it done.”
HF2238 passed unanimously out of the House and is currently in the hands of a Senate committee. To learn more about this and other topics at the Iowa Legislature, listen to today’s Perry Fareway Let’s Talk Dallas County program on air and at RaccoonValleyRadio.com.
