The high school wrestling season ended at the State Tournament on Saturday inside Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines with freshman McKinley Robbins finishing in second place in Class 2A at 106 lbs. Robbins was 37-2 as a ninth grader and is the first Ram freshman to make it to Saturday nights’ finals in the 55 seasons of wrestling based in Jefferson.

He’s not the only State qualifier returning for head coach Zach Beekman. Sophomore Brenner Gallagher at 113 lbs. not only qualified for State, but went 1-2 for a top 12 finish.

Those two will bring State Tourney experience to a wrestling room that will also include Sawyer Schiltz, a senior-to-be who qualified for the District in Atlantic at 220 lbs. Others with more than 25 wins this season coming back are current sophomore Nathan Black at 145 and current junior Brady Stauffer at 138 lbs.

Others with experience will also be back, along with newcomers to the high school program from this season’s eighth grade.

The Rams went 23-5 in dual meets, setting program records for most duals wrestled and most wins in a season.
