Dallas County ISU Extension and Outreach is offering a free program that will run March through April, focused on giving kids a headstart on reading.

The “Raising School Ready Readers” program is open to children ages 3-6 and their families. It will take place Tuesdays from 6-7:30 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in Perry from March 3rd through April 7th, excluding the 17th. Extension emphasizes that there is no cost to take part in the program, thanks to a recent grant from the Bock Family Foundation, and attendees will each receive free books and other materials. Registration is required, and the deadline to sign up is this Friday.

Extension points out that research has shown good literacy skills have a positive long term impact on a child’s development, and they feel the earlier families start reading with kids the better. The program is co-sponsored by the Perry Public Library, First United Methodist Church, and Hispanics United for Perry. For more information or to sign up, contact Rosa Gonzalez with ISU Extension at 515-490-2298 or rdegonza@iastate.edu, or call the Dallas County Extension office at 515-993-4281.
