The Jefferson Street/Sewer/Sanitation/Water Committees met Tuesday in regular session.

The meeting started with a discussion of bills for a homeowner at 503 East Vest Street. Repair work on a broken sewer line was recently completed, after it was discovered one of the utility lines fell on top of the sewer line, causing it to break. The issue has been discussed by the committee for several months. Public Works Director Dave Morlan estimated city crews have invested over $3,000 into the project. The homeowner requested getting over $1,600 abated. The committee countered with abating $1,000.

The street committee discussed an upcoming project. Jim Lieding with Bolton and Menk presented a $120,000 cost estimate to resurface the City Hall parking lot and alleyway and installing foundations in the north alleyway for the Jefferson Matters: Main Street Arch Alley project. City Administrator Mike Palmer said the City budgeted $60,000-$70,000 for the project in the recently approved list of bond projects. The committee agreed to move forward with the engineering portion of the project, and wait to see if there are leftover funds from the four trail projects that will be bid next month.

The meeting ended with a discussion of recycling and sanitation rates. Mayor Matt Gordon presented comparable rates with similar population size and surrounding communities. According to the report, Jefferson residents are paying $16.65 per month. Gordon said there is a shortfall of $83,000 for recycling and sanitation. The committee is looking to raise both rates, as they do with water and sewer, to help increase the revenues for the departments. No formal action was taken by the committee.
