Following the Major League Baseball investigation that found the Houston Astros baseball team cheated during the 2017 World Series, young athletes everywhere took notice.
It was reported that the Astros stole signs, which helped them win the World Series. Then earlier this month, the owner of the team said it didn’t affect the outcome of the game, but the MLB fined them $5 million and they lost several top draft picks. Greene County High School Activities Director Todd Gordon sees the two biggest takeaways that young athletes can learn from is lessons in leadership and accountability.
“And that’s what I think is the worst example for kids is to hear how excuses were made, and instead of just being accountable. And then some of the players got up there (during the press conference) and the worst excuse of all to me was when one of them said, ‘Well I wish I would’ve said something and done something then,’ that’s too late. If you meant that you would’ve done something, that’s just words.”
Gordon believes the “apologies” by the Astros organization were not sincere and he thinks that will prevent baseball fans from moving on, like the Astros want to do. He reminds student athletes that even though these players are professional athletes, the ultimate role models start and end with the parents.
