A listless Paton-Churdan offense came to life in the third quarter and the Rocket advance to Friday nights Class 1A Region 8 girls’ basketball semifinal vs. top ranked and undefeated Newell-Fonda in Newell. P-C trailed underdog Glidden-Ralston in Churdan 27-13 early in the third quarter, then exploded for a 25-2 run and a 38-29 lead early in the fourth. The lead eventually grew to 12 points for the 15-8 Rockets, who went 3-0 this season against a 10-13 G-R team that had its four game winning streak snapped. Sophomore Carmyn Paup scored 24 points and junior Tessa Steimel added 12, all in the second half to lead P-C. Danielle Hoyle, the leading scorer on the season was held 11 points under her average with eight. Paup and Steimel each hit a trio of three-pointers to fuel the 20-point third for the Rockets. In all, P-C made nine three-pointers, eight in the second half. P-C was 18 of 51 after going one of 12 in the opening quarter.
G-R made seven three’s and was led by senior Hannah Whitver with 21 points and four three-point goals. G-R went 14 of 42 from the floor and four of nine from the foul line.
