Kids and adults can learn about what helps birds stay warm during the winter and make an item to help their winged neighbors during an event at Springbrook State Park.
Iowa Department of Natural Resources Training Specialist Anne Riordan is hosting a program “For the Birds” on Saturday, February 22nd from 10 a.m.-noon at the park office. Riordan says those of all ages can come make a suet feeder to take home, “Probably depending upon the group maybe we’ll make a few different kinds. Some that would be easy for kids to make and some that are a little more involved for the older kids and the adults and work on that together.”
For those unfamiliar, Riordan explains that suet is a mix of fats which birds eat. A basic suet combines equal parts of beef fat and bird seed, but other concoctions can include products like lard, natural peanut butter, and grain. This event is free and open to the public.
