The Perry School District finds itself with a notable job opening following the resignation of varsity football head coach Matt Hardy.
The School Board accepted Hardy’s resignation at their recent meeting. The coach said his decision wasn’t motivated by any on or off field issues with the team or coaching staff, and had everything to do with the time commitment the job required. Perry Superintendent Clark Wicks points out that Hardy has a young family and wanted to spend more time with them, which is something Wicks as a former coach fully understands. “The one thing that you just have to always realize is the amount of time that these coaches spend and invest in our kids. And there’s also a big difference between associate or assistant coaches and the head coach. When that level of responsibility goes on your shoulders, it’s a whole other game. So thanks to Matt Hardy and his family for his service, and now we’ll be looking for a head football coach.”
Hardy took over for former head coach Jason Olejniczak at the start of the 2018 season, with the latter staying on as an assistant. In two years, Hardy’s teams went 0-18, though there were several close calls and the squads were lauded for their effort. Wicks says he’s unsure at this point if the District will promote from within or make an outside hire, though he emphasizes that the new coach must have a lot of Perry pride. Meanwhile, Hardy will remain a math teacher at Perry High School, will continue to coach middle school basketball and girls high school track, and plans to coach youth football.
